Research has shown that shock-absorbing shoes (orthotics) can prevent
and treat low back and leg problems.
One study of 146 men and women in the military showed that cushioned
orthotic shoes decreased the rate of back and leg problems. Several other
research studies, and common sense, indicate that shock-absorbing shoes
help back pain in workers who do a lot of standing.
Foam
inserts were used in early research studies. Although helpful, it was
excessively hot. Recently, shoes with integral springs have been
introduced (Z-Coils). These shoes provide better shock-absorbing, without
the problems associated with viscoelastic foam.
Orthotic shoes may be covered by some insurance plans including
workers’ compensation.
